As a mountain biker, I’ve come across a lot of unusual things in the desert: abandoned cars, Hohokam petroglyphs, mule deer, and windmills.
Like a cottonwood tree, windmills are indicative that there’s a water source. Today we simply turn on the faucet and out comes the water, but just over a hundred years ago, you had to find your own water source for ranching in the middle of the desert.
I’ve been told that the wells I come across in the McDowell Mountains (Pemberton, Windmill Trail, and Brown’s Ranch) are from the same water table—Different wells, but all ultimately sharing the same water source underground.
Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to guard our heart for it is the wellspring of life. In fact, we’re told that above all else that we are to guard our hearts.
In the desert, if the water table or source becomes polluted, it affects all of the other wells. Likewise, if our heart becomes polluted, it affects everything; our relationship with God, attitude, lifestyle, relationships, potentially even our health.
How’s your water source, i.e., heart? Is there anything that risks polluting it? If yes, the good news is that Jesus is the Purifier. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 Jn. 1:9)
