Back in 08, a guy in San Diego developed somewhat of a cult following through his challenge to possess only 100 things. It was a rather short-lived phenomenon. I remember one woman responding on his blog that she probably had that many things in her purse.
Truth is, we have a way of accumulating stuff. Stuff that crowds out what’s really needed. In Matthew 21, Jesus clears out the money changers and pigeon sellers from the court of the Gentiles in the Temple. We’ve seen Jesus put up with a lot; rejection in His hometown, the arrest and execution of John the Baptist, faithless disciples, and on-going harassment from the legalists, but we’ve never seen Him this upset. Why? Although it had begun with the best of intentions,, the merchants and money exchangers were not only exploiting those seeking to worship, but they’d become a distraction and a barrier.
Of course, today the Bible teaches that our body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit. Are there some things that you need to clear out? Are there things that are cluttering your soul and have become a distraction to your relationship with God? Clear them out and leave them in 2018. There’s no need to wait until March 21st to do some spiritual spring cleaning. You’ll be glad you did.
