“One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul” – David (1 Sam 27:1). Of course, he wasn’t, but in this passage we see that even the one who overcame Goliath had his moment of doubt and fear. It can happen to the best of us.
- What does the future hold?
- What will it mean if the election doesn’t go the way I voted?
- What about all of the YouTube prophecies about this Fall?
- Will I be alone in my senior years?
- What if I get a fatal disease?
etc. etc.
David had been on the run from Saul for so long he was starting to question his future and God’s providence. Without doubt, life as a shepherd was one of simpler times. There are times in which we long for the “good ol’ days”…of 2019. However, living a purposeful life for God comes with some risk; there’s simply no other way around it.
Jesus would regularly remind “wanna-be disciples” of the risks and discomforts involved, i.e. “If anyone want to come after Me let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow” or “the foxes have their holes and the birds of the air have their nests, but I don’t have a place to sleep tonight” (I can tell you one thing it wont be at the Four Seasons)—Are you still in?
The disciples also wanted to know the future, “When will this be and what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?” (Mt. 24:3). Whereas Jesus provided some indicators, i.e., “birth pains”, they were not given the exact date and time “only the Father knows”.
Whereas we don’t know exactly what the future holds, you can always take comfort and rest in the fact that there’s never a moment ever when He is not aware of you, your situation, and your needs. We may not know the exact details of the future, but what is more important is that we know the One who holds the future—Jesus. He’s already there and available for you.
